Charity Bike Ride
Bristol Temple Meads to London

10th – 12th September 2013

My friend, Graham Smith, and I took the 5am train to Bristol Temple Meads. We then took the cycle path from Bristol to Bath which was on a lovely tarmac drive for about 12 miles. Then we rode along the Kennet and Avon canal towpaths. Some of which were non-existent and mostly over old bricks and flint. Only managed one puncture that day.

We stayed over at Pewsey and carried on with our journey the next morning where the surface was even worse. It rained all day and sometimes torrential so our speed was only 2-3 miles an hour. We were hampered by a further two punctures and a 10 mile stretch of cow/sheep fields where we had to go through metals styles every 200-400 yards. Very, very time consuming.

Our second stop over was at Reading and the next day we carried on our journey along the Thames Path. Our target was to do Bristol to London and if possible the O2 Dome at Greenwich but because it was such a nice day and the Thames Path was a dream to ride on, sometimes reaching 16-18 miles an hour, we carried on passed the Dome and finished at Erith Pier.

Over the three day period we completed 190 miles. Not going on any roads but just along riverside paths. For me it was a real personal achievement as I am not a cyclist and it’s up there along with the triathlons and marathons which I have run for charities in the past.
